Zinedine Zidane’s infamous forehead; “rather die” than apologise?

01Mar10

The Spanish news site Elpais gave a story than ended up in Monday’s Gossip Column on the BBC Sport website.

Zinedine Zidane, when asked about that infamous event in The World Cup Final four years ago between France and Italy, told Elpais that he would “rather die” than apologise to Marco Materazzi.

That headbutt is world-famous, and will forever have a place in my heart.

Italian diving?

No-one cared.

Putting the game into disrepute?

No-one cared.

If someone starts up with something about your mum in a football match, then it’s on.

Like Donkey Kong.

My favourite parody is also worth a mention;

Zinedine Zidane, you missed some of the World Cup Final, but you are forever a footballing hero.
